Larry Joe Chumney

Tullibee Veteran Larry Joe Chumney, 72,
departed on Eternal Patrol on August 23, 2013.
He served aboard Tullibee as an STS from 1966-1969.

Mr. Larry Joe Chumney, 72, of St. Peters, MO and formerly of Troy, MO, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2013, at Barnes/Jewish Hospital in St. Peters,MO. Larry was born on December 13, 1940, in St. Louis, MO to Coy Franklin and LaVerne (Bruns) Chumney. He was the oldest child of four children in the Chumney clan. The family lived in Moscow Mills and this is where Larry attended the local schools, graduating from Troy Buchanan High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was proud to serve his country. He worked as a sonar operator, serving for nine years. During this time, he met the love of his life, Nancy Scheetz. Soon after, the couple was married and they relocated to New Hampshire.

Larry attained additional education while serving in the U.S. Navy. After his honorable discharge from service, Larry and Nancy moved back to his hometown of Moscow Mills. He always loved to cook and so the couple opened their first restaurant in Troy in 1976, Chums Restaurant. Three years later, they moved to a bigger location, enabling them to serve even more of their clientele. Many loyal customers would come in every morning for coffee, or a delicious steak dinner in the evening. Chums Restaurant was the place to go to celebrate birthdays; they would give you a delicious steak dinner and even take your picture with your cake covered in candles, and send you home with the photo. After any sporting event, or game, anyone who was anyone went to Chums.

Larry was a welcoming host who appreciated each and everyone of his customers. His life was the restaurant, 24/7. No where could you find a more hard-working restaurant owner. Surviving are his loving family: his wife, Nancy Chumney; his daughter, Sherry Campbell of Winfield; his siblings: Carol and husband Bill Brown of St. Peters, Richard and wife Linda Chumney of Troy and Michael and wife Helena Chumney of Winfield; his two grandchildren: Joey Chumney Eads and Lana Eads and his four adoring great-grandchildren: Leslie, Joseph, Adian, and Eli; many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Coy and LaVerne Chumney and his son, Larry Joseph Chumney who died in 1997.
